Frequently asked questions

What is a bread-and-butter letter?

It is a traditional thank-you note to a host after you have stayed with them or been their guest. It thanks them for their hospitality and mentions a highlight of the visit.

What do I write to thank someone for dinner?

Thank them for the invitation, compliment a dish or the evening, mention the company, and suggest getting together again.

Should I send a thank-you note after a party?

For a casual party a message is fine, but a note is a lovely touch — especially for a dinner party, an elaborate celebration or a host you do not see often.

Should the whole family sign the note?

If you visited as a family, one person can write the note and everyone can sign it, or you can sign as "The Sharma family".

Can I add drawings or decorations?

Yes. Use the Add elements tab to place a house, a coffee cup, a pie or flowers on the note, then drag and resize them.

What page size should I use?

A 5 × 7 in card or A6 is the classic note size. Choose a square size if you plan to share it online.

How do I write a thank you letter for hospitality?

Address your host by name, thank them for having you, mention one or two specific moments (a meal, a day out, the guest room), say what the visit meant to you and invite them to visit you. Example: "Dear Meera and Raj, thank you for welcoming us so warmly last weekend. Your home-cooked dinner and the evening on the terrace were the highlight of our trip. We hope to return the favour soon. With love, Anita."

What does a host write to say "thank you for staying with us"?

Hosts, homestays and guesthouses can thank guests too: "Thank you for staying with us. It was a pleasure having you, and we hope you enjoyed your time here. Our door is always open — we would love to welcome you back." Add the guest's name and the dates of the stay for a personal touch.
